Optimus Gen 2 improves walking speed, balance, and dexterity, with 11 DoF hands and integrated tactile sensing. Tesla is targeting a long-term price point suitable for both industrial and household deployment. As of Tesla's Q3 2026 earnings on October 21, production has begun on the high-volume Fremont line — Tesla says the first 'production-quality' Optimus units are now coming off it, classed as an early ramp — while a larger Austin factory is under construction. Deliveries to outside customers are targeted for around the end of 2027, with industrial users first; early output feeds Tesla's own 'Optimus Academy,' a planned 10,000–20,000-robot training fleet, rather than buyers. Musk cautioned the ramp will be slow and uneven, hand hardware and the AI5 compute upgrade (targeted around April 2027) are still being finalised, and Tesla has disclosed no customers, unit count, or price.
