Optimus Gen 2: Tesla's humanoid learns to handle eggs without breaking them.

Tesla published a 1:43 demo video of Optimus Gen 2 — its second-generation humanoid — on December 13, 2023. The Gen 2 platform introduced Tesla-designed actuators and sensors, 30% faster walking, 10 kg less weight than its predecessor, and 11-DoF hands with tactile sensing capable of manipulating an egg without cracking it.

The video was, in the polite reading, an aspirational manufacturing target. Optimus is still a long way from the sub-$30k factory-and-home price point Tesla has publicly floated. But Gen 2 shifted the conversation from 'can this robot walk without a tether?' to 'can this robot manipulate a fragile object with a general-purpose hand?' — and it did so before every other Western full-size humanoid had matched the walking demo.

For prospective buyers, Optimus remains a status: 'In development.' For the category as a whole, Tesla's continued investment matters less as a product roadmap and more as a supply-chain gravity well. When Tesla commits to an actuator design, the rest of the sensor and actuator supply base adjusts around it.
