NVIDIA declares the 'ChatGPT moment for physical AI' at CES 2026, extends GR00T and Cosmos to humanoids.

If CES 2026 had a thesis statement, NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang delivered it in his January 5 keynote: 'The ChatGPT moment for physical AI is here — when machines begin to understand, reason, and act in the real world.' A year after he first said that inflection was 'around the corner,' Huang told the Las Vegas audience it is now 'nearly here,' and predicted robots with some human-level capabilities would appear during 2026. For a category long accused of overpromising, the framing matters because it comes from the company selling the shovels.

The substance was in the software. NVIDIA introduced a new version of its GR00T vision-language models for humanoids — turning sensor input directly into body control — alongside an updated Cosmos model aimed at robot reasoning and planning. The company also folded robotics safety into the pitch, a signal that it wants to own the full stack from simulation and world models down to on-robot control and functional safety, not just sell GPUs to robot makers.

The partner roll call is what should concentrate competitors' minds. Huang named Boston Dynamics, NEURA Robotics, LG Electronics and Caterpillar among firms building on NVIDIA's robotics technologies. That list spans a Hyundai-backed humanoid leader, a European contender, a consumer-electronics giant, and heavy industry — evidence that NVIDIA is positioning its platform as the default substrate regardless of which hardware vendor ultimately wins.

For buyers, the strategic read is that the humanoid market is consolidating around a small number of AI platforms rather than fragmenting into proprietary silos. NVIDIA's claim that physical AI could reshape the $50 trillion manufacturing and logistics economy is characteristically grand, but the practical implication is concrete: standardizing on GR00T and Cosmos lowers the integration risk of betting on any single robot vendor, because the underlying intelligence layer is increasingly shared.
