Boston Dynamics unveils production Atlas at CES 2026, ships to Hyundai and Google DeepMind this year.

Boston Dynamics chose Hyundai's CES media day to retire the 'when will Atlas be real' question. On January 5 in Las Vegas, the company unveiled the product version of its fully electric Atlas humanoid and confirmed it would begin manufacturing immediately at its Boston headquarters. Crucially, this was not a concept teaser: CEO Robert Playter said all 2026 Atlas deployments are already fully committed, with fleets shipping to Hyundai's Robotics Metaplant Application Center (RMAC) and to Google DeepMind in the coming months, and additional customers slated for early 2027.

The spec sheet is aimed squarely at industrial buyers rather than demo reels. Atlas carries 56 degrees of freedom, fully rotational joints, a 2.3-meter reach, and the strength to lift 50 kg. It runs in three modes — autonomous, teleoperated, or tablet-steered — and, tellingly for uptime economics, it self-navigates to a charging station and swaps its own batteries rather than stopping when power runs low. It connects to MES and WMS systems through Boston Dynamics' Orbit software, and a task learned by one robot can be replicated across the entire fleet. GM of Atlas Zack Jackowski emphasized the part that matters to a CFO: the design slashes unique part counts and is built for compatibility with automotive supply chains.

The supply-chain story is the real moat here. Hyundai Motor Group, Boston Dynamics' majority owner, is preparing to deploy tens of thousands of the company's robots across its own plants, and Hyundai Mobis will supply Atlas's actuators — the single most expensive subsystem in any humanoid. Pair that with a separately announced Google DeepMind partnership to embed foundation models for higher-level reasoning, and Atlas arrives with three things most rivals lack simultaneously: a captive first customer, an actuator supply chain at automotive scale, and a frontier-lab AI partner.

For the category, this reframes the competitive question from 'who has the best demo' to 'who has committed order books and manufacturable BOMs.' Boston Dynamics is entering 2026 with deployments locked, a majority shareholder building a factory targeting 30,000 robots per year, and a clear automotive beachhead. That combination puts direct pressure on Figure, Apptronik, and Tesla to show similarly concrete customer commitments rather than capability videos.
