Japan Airlines begins humanoid robot trials at Haneda Airport.

Japan Airlines launched Japan's first airport humanoid-robot demonstration in early May 2026, deploying Unitree-based machines for ground operations at Tokyo's Haneda Airport. Working with partner GMO AI & Robotics, JAL is trialing the robots on tasks such as baggage handling and cabin cleaning, with a phased program scheduled to run from May 2026 through 2028 and a stated goal of commercialization within roughly three years.

The machines are compact — about 132 cm tall and 35 kg, based on Unitree hardware with 23-to-43 degrees of freedom — and their limits are as instructive as their capabilities: an operating window of only two to three hours per battery cycle underscores that endurance, not dexterity, is often the gating factor for real shift work. JAL's early phases focus on mapping which airport tasks robots can perform safely before graduating to operational verification in live environments.

The driver here is demographic, not hype. Japan's aviation sector faces a shrinking, aging workforce even as inbound tourism surges, and JAL is explicit that labor savings are the point. That makes Haneda a bellwether for humanoid demand outside the warehouse-and-factory core: airports, hospitality and logistics-adjacent service work represent a vast addressable market if the robots can meet safety and uptime bars. It also marks another marquee reference customer for Unitree's hardware, reinforcing the Chinese firm's reach into demanding operational settings just as it heads for the public markets.
