Google DeepMind puts a frontier model in a robot body — and bets on Apptronik to carry it.
March 12, 2025 — Google DeepMind unveiled Gemini Robotics and Gemini Robotics-ER, vision-language-action models built on Gemini 2.0, and named Apptronik its lead humanoid hardware partner.

For most of 2024 the humanoid conversation was a hardware conversation: actuators, hands, degrees of freedom, battery life. Gemini Robotics reframed it as a software conversation. Google DeepMind took its frontier Gemini 2.0 model, bolted on action output, and produced a vision-language-action system that can interpret an open-ended spoken instruction and generate motor commands to carry it out — including on tasks and objects it was never explicitly trained for. The companion model, Gemini Robotics-ER, focuses on 'embodied reasoning': spatial understanding, pointing, and planning that other control stacks can call as a service.
What matters to a buyer is the generalization claim. DeepMind reported that the model more than doubled its score on a comprehensive generalization benchmark versus prior state-of-the-art approaches, which is the whole ballgame for anyone weighing a humanoid purchase. A robot that only does the exact motions it was scripted for is a fixture, not a worker; a robot that can be told 'put the loose parts in the blue bin' and figure out the rest is a labor unit. Gemini Robotics is a statement that the brain problem is now being attacked with the same scaling playbook that produced modern chatbots.
The strategic signal is the partner choice. DeepMind named Apptronik — not Figure, not Tesla, not a Chinese OEM — as its lead humanoid collaborator, and demonstrated the model driving Apptronik's Apollo. Coming just weeks after Apptronik closed a $350M round with Google itself participating, this told the market that Google intends to be the Android of embodied AI: supply the intelligence layer, let hardware partners build the bodies. For anyone evaluating Apollo, it means the robot arrives with a credible path to frontier-grade cognition rather than a bespoke in-house model that may or may not keep pace.
The open question for procurement is dependency. A robot whose intelligence lives in a partner's model inherits that partner's roadmap, pricing, and priorities — the counter-model to Figure, which severed OpenAI weeks earlier precisely to own its stack end-to-end. Both bets are now live in the market, and 2025 became the year buyers had to decide which one they trust: vertically integrated single-vendor robots, or best-of-breed bodies running a shared foundation model.
