Figure's BotQ: the bet that owning the factory beats owning the robot.
March 16, 2025 — Figure unveiled BotQ, an in-house high-volume plant designed to build up to 12,000 humanoids a year, with robots eventually assembling robots.

Figure spent early 2025 making noise about intelligence — the Helix VLA model, the OpenAI split — but BotQ was arguably the more consequential announcement for anyone who actually wants to take delivery of a humanoid. It is a purpose-built manufacturing facility whose first-generation line is designed to produce up to 12,000 robots per year, with a stated ambition to reach 100,000 robots and three million actuators within four years. The category's bottleneck has quietly shifted from 'can it work?' to 'can you build enough of them,' and BotQ is Figure planting a flag on the second question.
The engineering choices reveal a company preparing for volume rather than demos. Figure said it is moving from CNC machining to tooled processes — injection molding, die casting, metal injection molding, stamping — so that a part that once took over a week on a mill can be produced in seconds. That is the language of automotive-scale manufacturing, not of a lab shipping units to pilot customers. For a buyer, it is the difference between a hand-built prototype with an uncertain spare-parts pipeline and a product with a real bill of materials and a cost curve that bends downward with scale.
The headline flourish — Figure robots helping build Figure robots, using Helix to act as material handlers and assemblers — is part marketing and part thesis. If a humanoid can reliably work a production line, the most demanding early customer for humanoids is the humanoid maker itself, and every unit deployed internally is both a cost saver and a live reliability test. It also implicitly answers the buyer's first question: a company willing to stake its own throughput on its robots is signaling confidence competitors that only show edited demo reels are not.
The risk is that stated capacity is not shipped capacity, and 12,000 units a year is a design target, not an order book. But BotQ changes what a serious humanoid contender has to show. After March 2025, unveiling a capable robot was table stakes; the credible players also had to show a manufacturing answer. For procurement teams, BotQ made 'what is your production and quality-control plan' a fair question to put to every vendor in the running.
