Figure signs BMW: the first humanoid deal that felt real.

Figure announced a commercial agreement with BMW Manufacturing to deploy its humanoid robots inside the automaker's Spartanburg, South Carolina plant — BMW's only U.S. factory and, at 8 million square feet, one of the largest automotive facilities in the world. It was the first time a major carmaker had publicly committed to a humanoid partner, and the deal reset expectations for the entire category.

The scope was narrow on purpose: identify specific tasks — the kind of repetitive, ergonomically punishing work that has been the graveyard of purpose-built automation — then stage the robots into those tasks with human supervision. No press-release fantasy of a lights-out humanoid factory. Just a real facility, a real integration team, and a public timeline.

What made the announcement matter was the counter-signal it sent. BMW had spent years quietly evaluating humanoid platforms; picking Figure told the market that a Series-B startup with no shipped product had a credible shot at winning an OEM production contract. Within eight months, Figure would follow up with video of its second-generation robot operating on a Spartanburg body-in-white line.

For the buyer side, the takeaway was structural. Automotive general assembly is the beachhead for humanoids the same way logistics is the beachhead for AMRs. If your procurement team hasn't started thinking about humanoid pilots yet, your competitors already have.
