1X gives NEO human-level hands — and bets the home robot race is won at the fingertips.

1X gives NEO human-level hands — and bets the home robot race is won at the fingertips.

1X pulled the covers off a new hand for NEO, its home humanoid, and made an unusually direct claim: this is the piece the whole category has been waiting for. The hand carries 25 degrees of freedom — 22 fully actuated across the fingers and palm, plus three at the wrist — and 1X says it will ship on every NEO. In demonstration footage the robot assembles LEGO, picks individual screws and coins off a surface, installs a light bulb, uses a screwdriver, zips a jacket, sorts grapes by color, pours tea, plugs in a USB-C cable and signs in sign language. 'With these hands, NEO crosses a critical threshold,' founder and CEO Bernt Børnich said. 'The robot can now do the things humans do with their hands, every day.'

The engineering argument underneath the demo reel is about feeling, not just moving. Most robot hands are effectively numb: aggressive gearing of 100:1 or 200:1 swallows any contact force before it reaches the motor, so the hand executes a position and reports nothing back. NEO's hand runs quasi-direct-drive tendons at roughly 5:1 to 15:1, with the motors living in the forearm and pulling tendons through the wrist. Every one of the 25 joints is force-controlled and backdrivable, so it yields when pushed and reports exactly how hard — what 1X calls 'force transparency' — while high-resolution tactile skin on the fingertips reads pressure and shear to catch a slipping object. The hardware numbers are concrete: roughly 3.5 Nm of peak torque at the thumb, 17.75 Nm at the wrist, fingertip forces up to 45 N, plus-or-minus 0.2 mm positioning accuracy, and IP68 waterproofing with food-safe materials that let NEO rinse its own hands under a tap.

1X is also making a manufacturing argument. It says hundreds of the hands have already come off a dedicated in-house line and that it can build 10,000 this year, framing vertical integration — motors, tendons, electronics, tactile sensors and polymer skin all made internally — as the real moat in a dexterous-hand race that already includes rivals shipping thousands of units. The honest caveat is that the hardware is ahead of the software: 1X's own product-design lead told Forbes that NEO will ship with more hand capability than its AI currently knows how to use, and the consumer NEO still leans on scheduled human teleoperation — an 'Expert Mode' — for tasks it cannot yet do on its own. Counting degrees of freedom is easy; publishing how many household tasks the robot completes autonomously is the harder number, and that one is still missing.

For a home buyer, this is the most important spec change 1X has made, because in a house the hands are the product: folding laundry, loading a dishwasher, chopping vegetables and cleaning up afterward all live or die on force-sensing dexterity, not on how the robot walks. NEO can be reserved now at $20,000 outright or $499 a month, with US deliveries pledged before the end of 2026. The procurement reality check is the same as it was before the reveal: dexterous hardware sets the ceiling on what NEO can eventually do, not the floor of what it does on day one. Treat the new hand as a genuine milestone — and ask 1X for an out-of-the-box autonomous task list, with no remote operator in the loop, before treating the demo videos as a shipping capability.
