XPENG unveils Iron: 178 cm, 200 degrees of freedom, built on the XPENG AI stack.

At its 2024 AI Day in Guangzhou, XPENG unveiled Iron — a 178 cm, 70 kg bipedal humanoid with more than 60 joints and 200 degrees of freedom. XPENG is the second Chinese EV maker after BYD's UBTECH partnership to publicly stake a first-party humanoid position, and Iron is the tightest example yet of automotive-AI stacks flowing directly into humanoid product.

The pitch was continuity, not novelty: the same neural architecture that powers XPENG's driver-assistance system, the same 40-core Turing chip, the same manufacturing capacity used for its EVs. XPENG framed Iron's early deployments around its own retail and factory environments — showrooms first, then production floors.

The pattern here — automaker leverages autonomy stack into humanoids — is now the second-most-common humanoid company shape after 'pure-play robotics startup.' Expect more of it.
