Alibaba makes its first embodied-AI bet with X Square Robot's ~$100M round.

Shenzhen-based X Square Robot disclosed a funding round of around $100 million led by Alibaba Cloud, with HongShan (the former Sequoia Capital China) also participating. It was the startup's eighth raise in under two years, and — more notably — Alibaba Cloud's first direct check into embodied intelligence. The money is earmarked for training the company's self-developed foundation models and iterating its humanoid hardware.

The significance is less about one startup and more about which balance sheet is now in the game. Alibaba has been seeding the Chinese robotics stack broadly — it holds positions across Unitree, Robotera, LimX and others — but a direct, lead investment signals it intends to treat embodied AI the way it treats cloud and large language models: as strategic infrastructure worth owning, not just renting. When a hyperscaler with that much compute and capital picks a horse, it reshapes the competitive field around it.

For buyers watching the market structure, this is a data point about capital concentration. X Square prices its humanoid around $80,000 — well above Unitree's bargain tier — and positions itself on the strength of its foundation models rather than cheap hardware. Alibaba's backing gives it the training compute to pursue that thesis, and mirrors the pattern in the US, where NVIDIA and the cloud giants are increasingly the ones underwriting humanoid ambitions. The counter-signal is that the era of scrappy, independently financed robot startups is giving way to platform-backed contenders.

The usual caution applies: an eighth round in twenty-four months is a sign of ferocious capital appetite as much as validated demand, and a foundation-model-first pitch still has to translate into robots doing reliable work. But for anyone mapping who will still be standing in three years, the identity of the investor matters as much as the size of the check — and Alibaba just planted a flag.
