Boston Dynamics retires hydraulic Atlas — and unveils an all-electric successor.

Boston Dynamics did the funeral and the birth announcement in the same week. On April 16, 2024, the company published a farewell to the hydraulic Atlas — the research platform that had defined public perception of what a humanoid could physically do. On April 17, it unveiled the successor: a fully electric Atlas designed not for research, but for customer deployment.

The reveal video was, in the words of The Verge, 'swiveling nightmare fuel' — Atlas standing up from a prone position via a joint sequence no human anatomy could produce, then pivoting its torso 180° like an inversion of everything the hydraulic platform had trained the audience to expect. It was a deliberate signal. This Atlas isn't built to look human. It's built to work in factories, and it uses whatever joint topology gets that done.

Boston Dynamics named Hyundai — its parent company since 2021 — as the launch customer. The stated goal: productize Atlas for automotive manufacturing, with commercial rollout following pilot deployments. The research crown had passed. The product race had begun.
